Not Halloween scary. Florida division of elections keeps a copy of early voting & absentee ballot voting records on their website.
https://doe.dos.state.fl.us/fvrscountyballotreports/FVRSAvailableFiles.aspx
Scroll down to your county, click the link to the right of '9250', and import it into excel for easy readability. They have full names & party affiliations listed for everyone in the state that has voted early.
I guess it is a good way to check that your vote has been counted, but still a bit too big-brother-ish for my tastes. |

Football (aka soccer) jerseys. LA Galaxy Away jersey with Beckham's name & number on the way, along with a long-sleeved Bayern Munich '06 home jersey with Michael Ballack's name & number.
I've had my eye on one of the 'Don't Tread on Me' US team jerseys, and I found one on ebay, but after bumping it up i decided I didn't want to pay that much for it even though it's probably worth over $100. I'm hoping the current bidder wins & the seller decides not to sell to someone with 0 feedback. Same guy has a US team home jersey from a few years back with Brian McBride's name and number that's under $10 that I bid on as well.

» Lyric game - stolen from springdew
I don't usually post games like this, but it gave me a chance to use shuffle play on itunes which I normally don't do. Looking at my list it should be eaiser than springdew's ;)
1. Put your iPod, iTunes, WinAmp, music device of any sort on random and hit play (whole collection). 2. Post the first lines of the first fifteen songs (that have lyrics), no matter how embarrassing. 3. People will guess in screened comments. 4. As they get them right, add the title and artist, and strike them out.
Enjoy. :)
- then there are the cliches, lazy language. but we had answers for those cliches, kids had answers for those cliches, we didnt get to deliver them, no sense getting the shit beat out of you every day.
- Ive been over the hill and back, survived every kind of attack
- its a critical solution, and the east coast got the blues, its a mass of confusion like the lies they sell to you
- 50 cups of coffee and you know it's on, I move the crowd to the break of break of dawn
- There's colors on the street, Red, white and blue
- Third floor, hardware, Children's ware, ladies lingerie.
- 2nd I want you, I need you, I want you to be mine tonight
- lay beside me, tell me what they've done, Speak the words I want to hear, to make my demons run
- Ninety thousand screaming watts, Honey dripping from her pot
- and answering machines, starting with people who think its cute to let their children record the outgoing message
- let me take you to the movies, can i take you to the show
- tables turned again and you my friend, You and I face each other all time and time again
- yes yes so, yes yes so
- Disappear Disappear Higher Higher Into the air
- You took our lives away to increase your self esteem.

» Bar-Celona
I'm sitting in a restaurant called the Cafe & Bar Celona here in Frankfurt. It's a stones-throw from the hotel, and the only reason why I am here is because they have a free access point. I finished up the work related stuff later than I wanted (Friday afternoon), and paid a visit to Heidelberg yesterday. I think I did a lot while I was there, visited a really old castle there, snapped pictures until the camera's battery ran out, visited a museum, walked around the city, and had a real german meal in a real old-style german restaurant. I took the train back to Frankfurt and got in around 7. I took a nap, caught some dinner, watched TV and fell asleep. I was thinking about hitting Munich or Berlin today, but I think I'm just going to do some sightseeing here today and tomorrow - all the walking from yesterday killed me.
I'd really like to come back here when the kids are older & visit some of the smaller towns along the Rhein, we really need to get out more...
That's all for now, I'll probably upload the pictures I took later today or tomorrow.

» Off to Deutschland
I'm leaving for Germany in about 10 hours on a business trip. We're moving all of our sites from the datacenter in London to Frankfurt, and I bullied my way into going was chosen to setup our servers. The plane arrives in Frankfurt at 6AM on sunday. This is my first trip to Europe, only my second out of the country, and my first international flight. I'm a little nervous because I don't know any German, but I'm excited to have the opportunity. Tania is taking the week off, and she's happy to have a mini vacation but I'm going to miss her and the kids. We tossed around the idea of her bringing the kids (the only expense would be her & the kids plane ticket), but in the end we agreed that her being cooped up in a hotel room with a 3 year old and a 9 month old would be too stressful.
I was hoping to catch a football match while I am over there, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. One of the club teams is playing on Thursday night, but I think it is sold out and all of the ticket sites I have checked want over $200 for a ticket + the cost of a train ticket. Speaking of trains, I'm hoping I can get all the work done by thursday so I can buy a eurorail pass and visit Berlin, Munich, and possibly Paris. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures while I'm over there.

The voting machines in PBC aren't diebold, but there are still vulnerabilities:
http://josephhall.org/nqb2/index.php/2006/10/13/
These are the same type of voting machines that are deployed throughout PBC for Tuesday's election.
This is the first I've heard of any county or other entity that oversees elections contracting with security experts to provide a technical assessment of possible vulnerabilities in the voting machines. The report that Princeton university put out on the Diebold machine was independent and not commissioned by any state or county supervisor of elections.
It's too bad Florida doesn't require a paper record of votes.

Tania woke me up around 8 and mentioned that she felt like she was urinating without trying, and was wondering if her water broke. Shortly after that her contractions went from one every 10 mins to every 3 minutes, followed by some severe pain. I called my dad, rushed around and got jada, and hightalied it to the hospital. Tania was in some pretty bad pain at that point. My dad made it there a few minutes after we got to the hospital. We had to wait about 10 minutes (seemed longer than that) in the lobby, and Tania was in some real bad pain. Once we got to the room they gave her an epidural which calmed her down. I went into the lobby to check on my Dad and Jada, and walked them out to the van. A few minutes later I heard one of the nurses calling for me, and I ran back into the hospital. The doctor was in our room and said that she was ready to start pushing. Long story short, after about 10-15 minutes of pushing Maya Brielle Beauchea was born at 11:30 AM. She weighed 9lbs, 5 oz, and is 21.5 inches. Here's a link to some pictures:

I found that making a disc image of the 10.4 upgrade DVD, deleting /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/Contents/Resources/CheckForOSX and InstallationCheck from the image, and reburning the image turned the upgrade DVD into a full install DVD. Thanks apple. :/

My old G4 is having problems installing 10.4 from the DVD that came with the iMac G5 I purchased last year. I originally thought it had something to do with the SIIG ATA 133 card I have installed (needed for +136GB drive support), but it turns out I get a kernel panic even without the card installed. If any local folk @ work have a 10.4 install DVD (preferably retail and not the restore DVD that comes with the mac) that they could lend for a few days, I'd apprecate it.

- Power is on. W00t. - I took my car in for an appraisal on Halloween, and got a call from the adjuster today. He confirmed that the damages exceed the value of the car, and the amount he quoted for the value - the deductable was still well over what I would get if i had sold the car outright as a trade in or privately. I'll still need to hang onto it until we get a minivan to replace tania's car. - Speaking of Tania's car, we're still getting the run-around from her insurance. The claim paperwork has been sitting on the adjuster's desk for over a week now. An appraiser is supposed to come out and take a look at it within a week. - Halloween pics here:

» Update 1 week later
Power - still out. Neighbor leant us a generator, but it uses a ridiculous amount of gas and our old-assed fridge can't hold the cold very well. To top it all off it wouldn't start yesterday night. My car - State Farm sez the damage exceeds the value of the car. Big suprise there </sarcasm>. I'm still going to need to hang onto it until we get another car. Tania's car - still waiting on an estimate. Trees - Stepbrother and friends came over on Saturday to cut down the gumbo-limbo tree that was sitting on Tania's car. I did some work cutting up one of the 10 or so trees in our swail that is down. House - still waiting on adjuster. Halloween - Breakfast at Dennys, Jada had a little party at school, we dressed her up and stayed with her a bit there. Brought her into work for a bit, then took her home for a nap. Worked on cutting some trees, then went to State Farm for damage assessment. While I was gone tania had 2 trick-or-treaters. When I got back we went to the mall and walked around a bit with Jada in costume.

» Update
We still have no power at home, have plenty of water, food, ice, and gas. My stepbrother and a few of his friends came over to help cut down the tree sitting on tania's car and our roof. The 13 or so trees in our swail are still down. More and more people friends and co-workers are getting power, so I might take advantage and get a hot shower and some laundry done next week. I need to find a tire place where i can get the flat tire on my car replaced/repaired, and I have an appointment with State Farm on Monday to assess the damage to my car. I'm in a pretty good mood today for no particular reason.

All of the trees around our property and tania's car got pwned by Wilma. We had a mirror in the shape of elmo pinned to the backseat of the accord that faced forward, so we could keep an eye on Jada when her car seat was facing backward. We never took it out of the car when we switched her seat around, and when the tree in the front yard fell on her car it managed to land right on elmo:

We're pretty much in the same boat as the rest of the county - alive, house is still standing, no power. My car has some damage to the roof but is drivable. To add insult to injury one of the 3 month old tires on my car got a flat yesterday. Today, I was trying to siphon some gas from tania's car and managed to get tree sap in my hair. We're good as far as ice, food, and water is concerned but I'm running low on gas and I don't want to drive around too much on the doughnut with all the debris and Floridiots on the road. I'm trying to stay positive about the whole ordeal, but it's getting harder day by day.

Did some more sightseeing in DC today. I got up around 8:30 and drove over to the rail station near the hotel. Caught the subway into DC and was dropped off at the Mall in between the Dept. of Agriculture and Museum of American History. Took a tour bus over to the FDR Memorial on the advice of a co-worker in Boca that used to live in the area. I liked that this memorial was different, instead of gi-normus marble statue of FDR, there was a bronze life-sized one of him at the entrance. The memorial is split-up into 4 sections for each of his terms. There is a waterfall in each section that helps to convey the mood of the era. He had to deal with the Great Depression for his first term, and there is a calm waterfall in that area. America was in the middle of WWII during his second, and the water in that area crashes against large granite rocks and is much louder and violent than the other areas. The park is situated between the tidal basin and the Potomac, and there are some great views of downtown DC, Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument from the park.
I caught the tour bus next to the Jefferson memorial, snapped some pictures, and walked down the side of the reflecting pool to catch the Vietnam and WWII Memorials. It wasn't too busy since it was the middle of the week, and I enjoyed the walk. From the WW2 memorial I walked around the Washington Monument back to the train station. It looks like DC is trying to save money on public transportation, I had to buy their refillable transit fare card ($10 for the card which only came with $5 preloaded) just to get out of the parking lot! They didn't have any attendants in the garage to take cash. I'm going to give the card to Matt as a going away present before I leave.
I guess Murphy's Law was in full effect, because when I got into work and had our weekly meeting it slowly occured to me that nobody from our department would be in the building during the hurricane, and all would be working from home. Tania doesn't think that everyone else will lose power and/or Internet access, but I have a feeling that everyone else will end up losing one or both. My boss said they will evaluate things on Friday morning and determine at that point if people should come into work. In the meantime I guess I'm on-call.
